I saw this article in my newsfeed and thought it was perfect to share for the last day of Media Literacy week. I remember reading a while ago I read about how people would pad their comments section with positive reviews, but the service where you can buy friends or views was news to me. Good reminder to take everything with a grain of salt, especially if it’s online…

Most of us check out a company online before we decide where to spend our money. CBC’s Marketplace investigated how businesses can artificially inflate their online credibility through paid testimonials and fake reviews.

Media Literacy Week November 3-7

Just in case you were not aware, this week is Media Literacy week. Never heard of it? Here is the blurb from the website:

Media Literacy Week is an annual event that takes place every November. Co-led by MediaSmarts and the Canadian Teachers’ Federation (CTF), the week puts a spotlight on the importance of digital and media literacy as key components in the education of children and young people.

Check out the official website – it has a lot of resources for classroom discussions, including excellent videos plus a whole section entitled Ideas for Educators.

I am so excited! I just found this extremely useful pinterest board that bookmarks lesson plans for media literacy. Of special interest for quick lessons would be the PBS site- Question the commerical or Be the Ad detective.

MEDIA LITERACY WEEK: PART 1

The next few days will be dedicated to Media Literacy Week!

QUICK LESSON PLAN IDEA:

1. Divide students into groups.

2. Assign them a short media minute video to watch.

3. Have them record the discussion assignment at the end of the video.

4.Annotext their recording to pinpoint where they discussed the following questions:

  • Who is the target for this ad?
  • What are they selling?
  • What kind of strategies is the ad using in order to get  youth buy their product?
  • Are they any gender stereotypes involved in this ad?

Here is an interesting idea that could also be developed into a lesson plan:

To kick off our Media Literacy week, here is an interesting article about a media literacy smartphone. I checked to see if maybe they simply made an app (so you wouldn’t have to purchase the actual smart phone) but it doesn’t look like it. Still not sure how it works- if the buttons actually do anything or simply serve as conversation starters, which is also useful, but then, not necessary to have the hardware.
